Topic: Speed breeding

Language: English or German

Application deadline: 15th October 2020.

Rapid generation advance also called “speed breeding,” (SB) has been developed by the University of Queensland, Australia. This method uses prolonged photoperiods and controlled temperature to accelerate the growth of the plants. Up to six generations of spring wheat and pea can be grown in one year.
Although, SB method has been successfully applied and optimized for the range of crops, it is not possible to develop universal procedure for all plant species, and not even for the cultivars within the species, as they are also highly diverse in their response to photoperiod and temperature.
The overall goal of the proposed study is to:
(i) Create a low cost, mobile, bench top Speed Breeding (SB) cabinet - that will enable us to speed up the process of the plant growth and shorten the time between doing the crosses and harvesting seeds, allowing faster selection and population development.
(ii) Optimize growing conditions in SB cabinets for summer wheat and pea varieties.

Requirements: Basic knowledge of plant nutrition, physiology and morphology
